I just happened to have a 9V connector attached, but I’m powering the board with USB. I tried two readers and two antennas. One thing I noticed that there is a gap between pins on the antenna.

The missing pin is correct. That is by design. Looking at the datasheet for the different readers the ID12-LA and ID20-LA have internal antenna BUT the ID3-LA MUST have an external antenna. See :

I did not find it at Sparkfun but it is on this site: With the ID3LA RFID module it´s possible to read a tag up to 30cm

So am I missing a component? Could you provide a link for the external antenna?
