My ssd kit for the pi 5 isn’t working.

How can I tell if it is

You’ll need to follow the guide mentioned here [https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/accessories/ssd-kit.html](https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/accessories/ssd-kit.html)

It’s talking about the 2 connectors here

 ![image](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/sparkfun/original/2X/3/39794bd928f064575d730818318eb20534ac1ad5.jpeg)…they’re using the term ‘holder’ instead of ‘clamp’ or ‘connector’. Watch a video on youtube about m.2 hat install if you’re still iffy, but this covers most of it [https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/accessories/m2-hat-plus.html#m2-hat-plus-installation](https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/accessories/m2-hat-plus.html#m2-hat-plus-installation)

Ok, since it isn’t showing up on blkid it could be 4 things

1. **Physical connection problem** - ensure the cable is fully seated on both sides…as mentioned above, checking out a video might help

2. **Power issue** - The SSD may not be getting enough power. The Pi 5’s PCIe port can be picky about power delivery…what supply is being used?

3. **The SSD isn’t seated properly** in the M.2 slot of the SSD kit. Share a photo of the SDD in-place to help determine (but it should be fully flat/flush/level with other components with no parts of the pins showing and no angle)

4. **Firmware/bootloader/OS needs updating** - Older Pi 5 firmware doesn’t support NVMe boot; you might need to update the OS and/or bootloader

1. the picture attached doesn’t represent my case as I have header pins projecting above the “40 pin Connector”. I found that the black header provided prevented the 40 pin connector to seat all the way. I substituted slightly shorter ones. Should that be a problem? I need the pins to attach a 40 pin ribbon cable to connect a relay hat.

2. I was kindda rough on the little ribbon cable. Don’t know if I damaged it.

3. SSD module was already installed on the board

4. I think I have done all the updates and they were already up to date

5. I would like to see a picture of the 40 pin connector side

6. where can I put a voltmeter probe to check the voltage?

7. HOW CAN I OBTAIN ANOTHER RIBBON JUMPER AND PERHAPS A SECOND AS A SPARE.

1 & 2. Share some photos

3 & 4. Yay

1. Google image search

2. Do you mean to test the power being delivered? What brand power supply is being used? Is it a 27w RPi model?

3. Amazon 😃

1-2. photos attached

1. could you provide a link.. I can’t find anything

2. the power supply is what comes with the sparkfun basic kit.. 27W. I was hoping there was a place on the Hat that I could test for the presence of voltage but my volt meter probe is bigger than anything that is exposed on the board.

3. I was hoping Sparkfun could supply small part replacements. It could even be put in an envelope and sent in the mail. 🙂

Your photos didn’t attach, can you repost?

I don’t see the cables on sparkfuns website, they might not have any to send.

Which kit did you purchase that included a power supply, I’m wondering if you got a kit that had a power supply too small for the SSD hat.

EDIT: I see the kit, that power supply should be fine.

I don’t see 'em…sinze it doesn’t seem to be working for ya, you can also right click the photos, ‘send to’ → zip file, then right-click the newly made zip file and rename the file extension, adding “.txt” to the end of the file and upload that

Then I can download, rename to remove the “.txt”, unzip and check 'em out 🙂

Or upload them to a hosting site and paste the link (google photos, etc)

attached is a “text” file containing the things you requested. rename it to pix.zip. you know what to do.
I’m looking at them and a barely detectable skew is present on each of the connectors.. Is this enough to cause a problem?

Ok, I’ve spotted the issue…the upper cable section is askew by quite a bit

 ![image](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/sparkfun/original/2X/2/2875596a1114fecbe2f1890ced9303443a11818a.jpeg)
The red and blue lines I’ve marked on the photo are supposed to be parallel. Un-clip the black ears on that connector and re-seat it where it is fully inserted/straight/flush. In this photo the upper section is sticking out 2-3mm

</div>

Yes, after I sent that email I corrected the issue and it works.. little amber LED now comes on..

I figured out how to mount the SSD so I can see can access it from the command line.. I’d like to make it mount automatically on boot. I made a change to fstab that was purported to do it but boot hung up.. Couldn’t figure out how to get to a command line to re edit it and remove that line. So I’ll re-image the SD card.

1. how can I get it to auto mount?

2. the bigger issue is running the imager on the SSD.. When I get to the step where I have to type in the name exactly as shown above the line “BINIW……..” it doesn’t want to accept it so I can’t proceed.

3. there isn’t enough of the pins projecting from the hat to allow me to stack anything on top.. I’m going to try a different extension that has slightly longer pins.. also the M2 Hat rests FIRMLY on the official cooler fan.. Not sure that’s good. I’ll see if I can add an additional extender to see if ribbon still reaches it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated..

3. You can use custom standoffs/mounts, [there are kits available too](https://www.sparkfun.com/standoff-kit-210-piece.html)

I can’t run the imager on /dev/nvme0.
I go thru all the steps until you get to selecting the nvme0 device. When it’s selected you are asked to type in its name just as it’s displayed above the line where you type your entry. It’s something like this. BIWIN\_\_\_?\_\_\_TSD100. I don’t remember exactly. I do as instructed but it won’t allow me to hit the NEXT key which is disabled. Probably because it didn’t like what I entered. I also tried /dev/nvme0 which didn’t work either.

Ah, ok, I think I understand…you’re trying to use the Pi imager to image directly to the SSD from the GUI app?

Apparently there’s a known bug in that where it can be finnicky :-/ Try the steps below:

**Workaround** : Instead of typing the full name, try:

> 1. Use **Ctrl+Shift+X** to open advanced options and pre-configure, then the verification step might behave differently

1. Or use `sudo rpi-imager` from command line which sometimes bypasses the GUI verification quirk

2. **Alternative** : Flash the SD card, boot once, then use `sudo rpi-clone` or `dd` to copy the running system to `/dev/nvme0` instead of using Imager directly on NVMe

### For Auto-mount (safer than fstab):

Instead of fstab (which can brick boot if wrong), use a **systemd mount** or add `nofail` option:

```auto
> # In /etc/fstab, use:
UUID=your-ssd-uuid /mnt/ssd ext4 defaults,nofail,x-systemd.device-timeout=10 0 2
```

The `nofail` prevents boot hang if the drive isn’t ready.

OK, you can forget about me.. And thanks for all your help. I forget why but I was forced to make a new SD card and start from scratch. The imager worked on the SSD and I was able to image it and low and behold it boots from the SSD if no SD card is present.. didn’t have to do anything for that except change the boot order.. so all is working except for some software issues that aren’t pi related.
