Wireless in the Woods

Managed to trudge up the hill with the dogs today - and carry up the digital camera. So I have a few good photos and have been blogging my efforts as much for my own good as anything.

Anyways - to make a long story short I got the remote receiver placed at the top of the hill in the base of a bush, but with fairly good line of sight to the truck parking lot. Google Earth has it around 820m in distance between receiver and transmitter.

The 16 sec Sleep Mode cycle worked and 80% of packet tests went thru.

The long story - with pictures and other tests are at [my blog.

Would like to do some followup tests

  • obstructions closer to midpoint
log RSSI readings using a VB program I started working on…
    different antenna types
  • ](Off Grid in BC: XBee XSC Range Test Success!)

    Nice blog.

Quick reading - This will work much better if one end of the link uses a 10-20dBi gain antenna.

It’s been colder than normal here (San Diego) too - 72F today.

    Appreciate the comment and suggestion.

Not so sure about the weather comparison. You might have noticed the skiff of snow on the ground beside the bush. Right now I’m at home wearing long johns - not sure if you can even find those anywhere in San Diego.

I do have an eye on a couple of antenna options - assume directional is best bet?

Is there a preference (receiver or transmitter) when it comes to replacing existing with high gain antenna? Does it matter - or should I just replace the smaller of the two?

    Thanks again
