I am trying to setup the Xbee3 Thing Plus and hitting many walls. I am using Windows 11. Trying to install micropython onto the Thing Plus - Fatal error occurred: I need to get around this error.
C:\Users\ch>esptool --chip esp32 -p COM9 erase-flash
esptool v5.3.1
Serial port COM9:
Connecting…
A fatal error occurred: Failed to connect to ESP32: No serial data received.

First I installed Digi XCTU software for the XBEE3 Setup but it just showed 'Listing modem firmware from server: Connecting to server." and Hangs there. That is Fixed.
I restarted my PC and let this set with the startup for 10 minuets and it finally came up.
UPDATE: Disconnect the ethernet and WiFi (Internet) the network was blocking the connection and XTCU will not timeout.
…so XCTU is working now?
Try the steps here XBee3 Thing Plus Hookup Guide - SparkFun Learn and then see if you can run the example/next step
Yes - first disconnect from the internet so XTCU would launch and then reconnect. I had to just update the firmware even though it showed up to date.
The esptool error is expected because the XBee3 Thing Plus does not contain an ESP32. It uses a Digi XBee3 module with a Silicon Labs EFR32MG processor, so ESP32 firmware and esptool are not applicable.
Use Digi XCTU to detect the module, update its XBee firmware and enable MicroPython. Then upload scripts through XCTU’s MicroPython terminal/file-system tools. Confirm that COM9 is the XBee3 Thing Plus port and close any other program using it.
The network issue only affected XCTU’s firmware-list download; disconnecting the internet may let XCTU open, but firmware updates require access to Digi’s servers. If it hangs again, check firewall, proxy or antivirus filtering rather than trying to erase it with esptool.
