arduino- need help in controlling home appliances thro remot

hi frnds,

am new to arduino. Got myself settled with arduino by doing some simple projects. Refered many tutorials online. And now am thinking of doing one new project on my own. The idea is, I want to control all my home applainces like light, fan, tv, night lamp through a remote.

Basic ideas i want to implement:

i know we can control the arduino kit with the help of a ordinary tv remote using TSOP in arduion kit. My idea is connecting the arduino to the switch box of my house from where the supply current is goin to the home applainces. But my doubt is, will it damage the arduino kit if i directly connect it to my house power supply?

the questions is crazzy and silly. But i already mentioned am a beginner here. So please leave your comments and ideas so that i could finish this project with your support. thanks in advance :sunglasses:

You’ll need much more knowledge of electrical systems before going ahead.

Here’s a suggestion: Look at using X10 (X10.com) modules at each appliance. These “talk” via the power lines to various kinds of readymade controllers. To tie this into a DIY microprocessor project, you could use the TW523 module wired up to an Arduino. I think there’s an example project.

X10 exists in No. America 110VAC form and in 220V for other places. X10 is very old, getting near end of life, but millions have been sold and there’s still good supplies.

The main electrical box for your house - you’re referring to the circuit breaker panel? In that, there’s one breaker for area of the house. You don’t have access to each appliance/lamp/TV. Hence the suggestion to use X10.

Newer and more expensive is “Z-wave”, a wireless system similar to X10.

Homeseer.com’s forum has lively discussions on all this.

 yeah thanks man… tis really helped… wil hav a try
