are blue tooth products exempt from FCC approval?

I picked up a blue tooth based xbox controller and it doesn’t have an FCC ID on it anywhere. I thought all rf transmitters needed to have fcc approval.

The device is an XB-COMM LM616 (Hip Gear).

A quick Google search says that “every Bluetooth device sold in the US has to be FCC certified”; maybe they bought a Bluetooth module and integrated it? Actually, SF sells the SmiRf which utilizes a Bluetooth module; presumably Nathan et al didn’t navigate the FCC waters, so the OEM module is likely certified and they just integrated it. I thought i remember reading somewhere that the FCC sticker had to be visible, but I don’t remember now.

Interesting (and long) thread on a very similar subject (wireless xbox controllers and FCC stuff) [here](http://www.sparkfun.com/cgi-bin/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2551&highlight=)

yes, I am aware of that one (posted a number times to it…). That is where I learned about the FCC site thanks to Sam S.

I believe that it’s not illegal to sell components with out cert but if you integrate it into a product and sell it, you will need cert.
