AVR-JTAG-USB Set Up

I would like some clarification on the AVR-JTAG-USB set up. When I read the documentation, it indicates there is no need for external power as the device draws power from the USB port. I might conclude that the device would power my target as well.

The Olimex site indicates that the device draws power from the target board through pins 4 and 7 of the JTAG connector.

I’m guessing it can’t be both ways.

  1. Does the AVR-JTAG-USB draw power from the USB?

  2. Does the AVR-JTAG-USB supply power to the target board?

  3. (a little off topic) Does the AVR-JTAG-USB require the target be connected to be recognized in AVR Studio?
