AVR-p40 and programmer

I bought the atmega32 board (AVR-P40) and the serial programmer (AVR-PG1) with cpu installed. Chip has never been programmed asaik.

I installed pony prog and it shows atmega32 for device. I have a 15v dc supply plugged in to the board, and the programmer cable attached with red stripe toward pwr plug. I performed osc calibration. I loaded a hex file compiled with winavr for the chip. When I try to “write all”, I get device not found.

Questions:

  1. how do I know that pony prog is talking to the programmer right?

  2. how do I know the programmer has recognized the atmega32?

  3. Assuming I have a hex file ready, what else do I need to do to write it?

(I am especially concerned about the fuse links).

any tips at all to get the chip programmed will be appreciated. Once I can get a program in, then I understand how to light led’s and read pins. (My previous experience is with butterfly kit)

Tia

Could someone from sparkfun or olimex please address this?

thanks very much!

Try to do a chip Erase before programming. Also make sure you ISP cable is plugged in correctly. (pin 1 matches the pin 1 on ISP)

red stripe on cable should be “away” from pwr plug!

thanks.
