Has anyone used this USB AVR programmer, or have a recommendation for another one. I need a USB programmer, as I don’t have a standard parallel or serial port.

I use Atmel’s AVRISP MK2; you can get them from DigiKey for $36.

thanks, I’ll give that one a try.
The Atmel Dragon is a USB debugger/programmer for the AVR. It costs more than the AVRISP but is a lot more useful.

I have started to carry a new, low-cost, AVR programmer by a company named Small RF Budget. The programmer was designed by two German engineers that are pretty fanatical about quality.
I have the programmer listed here, along with target cables:
I have some info on programmers here:

I’m a fan of the dragon because it can support in-circuit debugging as well as ISP programming. But it doesn’t come with headers so you have to do some soldering.
The ISP devices that come pre-wired are easier for newbies. I prefer the USB devices unless your budget is real small. Many computers don’t have serial and parallel ports now.

many options available: kit, just the board, just the chip, etc.
i ordered one, built it in an hour or so, and it works great with avrdude (i’m on debian linux, but it should work under win/mac too)
