cannot program atmega8 with PonyProg2000

i have the following result:

  1. sucessfuly program atmega8 by AVR-PG2B via PonyProg2000 runnig Windows XP with 8Mhz crystal ( fuse bits modified to support external crystal ).

  2. chage the crystal to 16Mhz, it can run. but when i program chip again ( now 16Mhz), the chip become dead and the programmer said “device missing or unknow device”. The chip cannot be programmed anymore.

did the chip really dead or cannot do any ISP programing yet?

you probably set wrong oscillator fuses

AVRs are famous that you can lock them if you don’t set correct fuses.

if you set external oscillator you will be not able to program them anymore exept if you apply external clock to Xin pin.
