Debugging a 74hc595 setup

Hi,

for learning purposes, I want to connect a 74hc595 to some LEDs, however I am not sure how to put the shift register.

There is an D marker and a “o” in the IC, which would be Pin1?

Also, I tried both direction already, but in both cases the connection to the Arduino gets lost (and the green and yellow leds stop working too)

Any advice how I can debug the setup?

got it working now, the D is the important marker
