Decent IDE for developing microcontroller code

I am a bit rusty. It’s been a while since I did embedded development. Back before 2012 I worked with a a half dozen or more microcontrollers. Had a career as a Computer Engineer then moved to sales for last 10 years. I don’t recall the development environment ever being an issue before, however, many of my employers set them up for me. I’m now tinkering around at home and having a hard time getting one setup.

I’m not a fan of the Arduino IDE. It works but is cumbersome. I don’t recall what I last used for PIC and ARM development. I think was Eclipse? But I cannot get that setup for Arduino. Keep running into issues with the eclipse installer, then their extension marketplace, etc.

Is Eclipse IDE software still being supported? If so anybody know of a RECENT tutorial and or functional Arduino extensions to get it setup.

Long story short… What’s a good professional level IDE for embedded development?

I’ve never enjoyed working with Eclipse, but I am using Microsoft Visual Studio for Arduino development with the add-on plugin called https://www.visualmicro.com/ which really help streamline testing and is also actively supported.

If it is mainly the Arduino IDE editor you don’t like. You can configure it to use an external editor. Then just use the Arduino IDE for building, uploading, serial monitor, and installing libraries.
