Deformation measurement of metal sheet using strain gauge and Arduino

Hi,

I have seen a video of load cell application of strain gauge measurement.

But I am interested in a little different measurement. I would like to measure the deformation in a metal sheet using a strain gauge through HX711 Amp and Arduino.

Can you please little guide me in this?

Best Regards,

MG

I recommend an S-beam load cell. You can more easily change the fixturing, the surface that contacts and deforms the sheet. The fixturing shape & dimensions will influence the deformation. The S-beam will probably also be easier to install whatever will be applying the force.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

Actually, the metal will be covered with the dome and then the whole structure will be a vacuum and sent under the water of roughly 24m. That will cause the deformation in the metal. And I want to look for that deformation. The S-type load cell will work for that application. Or I could directly use the strange gauge underneath and on top of the plate?

That sounds like more of a dimensional measurement than a force measurement.

It’s not the dimension measurement in general. Due to the water pressure on the metal plate, it will deform (a few mm). And it has been also observed in the finite element analysis. Now I would like to build an experiment to confirm the same. By placing the strain gauge on certain points on the metal plate we could observe the change in resistance due to the slight bending of the metal plate. This is a tentative idea of measuring the deformation for that I would like to use HX711 and Arduino. But my concern is that I would like to measure the strain/deformation instead of weight. So, I need a little support in understanding this setup.
