desolder a FPC connector from PC motherboard

hello everyone

I need to desolder this connector:

from the motherboard of a laptop. It’s the keyboard connector. Believe me, I can’t save it, it’s almost destroyed (even if you can’t tell it from the picture).

I found a replacement part, the only problem is that I don’t know how can I safely desolder it.

My tools are:

Weller WLC100 (soldering station with 40W iron)

Desoldering braid

Solder

Any tips before I start destroying this laptop?

Since the connector is already bad and there is not reason to save it, what I usually do is cut all the pins from the connecter. Then it is easy to desolder each pin left on the PCB, clean up the pads with solder wick and install the new connector.

Flux. If you have unfluxed braid then you’re going to need it. Like waltr said, clip the pins so you can work with each one individually. It is X times harder to remove the whole part, where X is the number of pins. Heat the pad till you can remove each of the pins then use your braid (with some flux if unfluxed braid) to remove the excess solder. I would use rosin based flux, Then you can use a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol to clean up the left over flux. Apply alcohol to the Q-tip then scrub the rosin till clean and shiny. For the anchors on the ends be more cautious because those pads will be easier to damage since they likely wont have traces or a plane to hold them down.

The biggest point of caution is don’t try to pull the part or pins. Heat the solder till it is liquidous then push the pin off the pad or pick it up with some tweezers. If you damage the pad or trace attached you’ll be looking at a lot more repair work.

Good luck.

I use Chip Quik for that sort of thing:
