Different sounds around room

Looking for help on a new project!

I have what is essentially a small museum room, and I want to turn on the sound whenever I have guests. The easy way is to have an iPod + speaker that I turn on as we enter.

However, I think it would be really neat to have different sounds coming from different areas of the room, so the ambient sounds change as you walk around. Any hardware suggestions on a low-cost and easy way to do that? Preferably small so I can hide the components among the displays.

To clarify, I more just need a stereo-type sound effect (with more than 2 sources) instead of sound triggered by movement, touch, etc.
