E-paper diplay

Hi, it would be great if you would sell some E-paper (e-ink) display.

Btw does anyone knows of any online shop that sells them ?

Eink displays are (as far as I am aware) custom made for a particular customer - there is no ‘off the shelf’ eink display (other than their eval/demo board, and I expect that is not what you want.) Also, short runs of displays are fairly costly, as such I don’t expect you’ll find any hobbyist eink displays anytime soon.

few years back they refused to sell to sparkfun as they had some issues with who gets to use these finally as they had some sort of special technology they didnt want everyone playing with.

With the competitors catching up, is there any supplier that would sell a few (hundreds?) parts to SparkFun so that you guys could do a board for it?

If possible, a color board would be nice. As for the format, I was thinking of a large horizontal display (maybe around 10" x 2.75") to replace those static/moving text displays made up of LEDs.

Refresh rate wouldn’t be too important (under 2 seconds) since it would serve for banner/ad display. Computer users could rip up an interface to display photos side-by-side, display multiple widgets.

Arcade users could use it to display marquees dynamically on their tabletop cabinets, etc. I’m sure some people at arcadecontrols.com would like such a display for their tabletop cab.

^ I’m not certain if you are talking about the same thing here. There are no colour E-Paper displays available that I know of, only prototypes that I can see. E-Paper is used for high contrast easy reading at close up. Even if it wasn’t terribly expensive, it’s not really suitable to replace LED matrix displays.

Luckily, I looked at the E-Ink website and they have a prototype available for sale. I am currently looking for a buyer for one of my children so that I can afford it. One 8 year old boy for sale, blond hair, mostly complains and plays video games. Local pickup only. Thanks.

indeed, color e-ink display doesn’t exists, they’re being developed. b/w display instead exists on many products, the kit linked is the only one that i could find and it’s indeed extremely expensive

i guess the best way would be to savage a display from an e-reader, but without documentation it’s hard to work

It seems there is two technologies: [electrophoretic and electrofluidic.

[Color prototype from E-Ink in 2005.

[Lots of companies listed that are supposed to bring color e-ink or similar products to the market in 2010.

Anyway, is there anyone aware of an LCD/whatever display that’s in the range of 10x2.75" in size?](Samsung shows off color e-paper prototype, PVI might beat it to market in 2010)](E Ink. We Make Surfaces Smart and Green)](Electronic paper - Wikipedia)

And another one - [cholesteric

There are a few even more ‘out there’ ones (e.g. electrowetting displays), but no commerical products that I have seen yet.

[Kent Displays Inc makes an epaper-like zero-power (bistable) cholesteric display that comes in a few color combos, but no multi-color displays that I have seen. @Yvan256, there is one in ‘scrolling marquee’ form-factor of a size similar to what you are looking for. A screen refresh takes on the order of 1s at room temperature, so these would work for you (though anyone wanting scrolling / video, etc. is out of luck).

From what I understand these are much less expensive than equivalent e-Ink matrix displays, although like e-Ink I don’t know if there are great odds they would sell to hobbyists. E-paperlike screens in general tend to require a higher drive voltage than typical LCDs… there are only a few companies making these controller/driver chips, and they tend to be secretive (e.g. requiring an NDA just to find out whose chip is on the glass, let alone a datasheet…)

(Of course, all of that secrecy becomes moot once a live gadget and a logic analyzer show up in the same basement together) :P](http://kentdisplays.com)](Cholesteric liquid crystal - Wikipedia)

Well, Kent Displays aren’t in color so that would be pretty lame for a dynamic marquee area.

However, their Reflex™ LCD Electronic Skins is extremely interesting and could lead to dynamic colored pushbuttons. I’ve already emailed them about the possibility of coating existing products with a link to Happ Controls pushbuttons, we’ll see if we get a reply at all.

hi all.

i purchased two of the esquire e-ink magazines a little while ago

Needless to say both batteries are now Tango Uniform but the unit itself is ok and i have the main displays here if the OP has a use.

i also have a somewhat working (failed hack attempt resulted in the buttons going bad) PRS505 reader here which still turns on.

Posted an article or three on Youtube re. hacking the “car” part of the display, upshot is it can be done but the display needs to be sealed with epoxy double quick or something goes wrong after a day or so and it breaks :frowning:

any use?

regards, -A

How about the “Boogie Board” it’s made by Kent Displays using their Reflex LCD technology. At the moment it’s basically just a LCD whiteboard, but at $29.99, if the screen was harvest-able it might be cool for projects.

They’re pretty hard to find at the moment (always out of stock).

Just been trying to find out about these “Boogie Board”, and I don’t think they are proper displays which allow you to electronically generate a picture. I think they just use power to clear themselves…

If you guys find a nice flexible display send me a tell, id love to be able to put a HUD into my motorcycle helmet.
