Easydriver issues

Hi, I’ve just received the Easydriver 4.2 stepper motor controller, the IC is rated up to 30v but the electrolytic capacitor on my board it’s only rated for 8V! http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2613/boardq.jpg

It’s a marking error or I’m missing something?

There’s also another problem, the led doesn’t light up, i’ve checked ant there’s 5v at the otuput.

Whoops. Yah, you should contact SparkFun directly about that. Those caps need to be 30V or higher.

Also, the LED should light if there’s 5V. Sounds like your board is not a good one.

i see a lot of Easydriver’s popping :o

Interestingly, the schematic has a note that it must be a > 30V cap.

I just got a couple of these as well and noticed the 8V rating on the cap. Any resolution on this? Is this OK?

I do not recommend running them with 8V caps.

I dropped an e-mail to SF last week and got a reply from Jim in Tech Support. Below is his response to my inquiry. It looks like everything is OK with the caps chosen.

Good eye, but this is just a case of weird markings by the capacitor’s manufacturer. Here’s that cap’s datasheet: http://www.chemi-con.com/files/MZA.pdf. The ‘V’ on there means it’s rated to 35VDC.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

-Jim
