ethernet walkie-talkie

Hi,

One of my clients is a manufacturing firm. They would like to equip some of their key people with a walkie-talkie type of device, but the ones we have tested are all too “something or other” – mostly, there appears to be too much RF noise in the building. (Plasma welders/cutters, stepper motors, etc.)

However, wireless ethernet (various types) work well out on the floor. I’m wondering if an IP based handheld communicator exists to do walkie talkie style communications over ethernet.

And no, we’re out in the sticks (Styx?) so the PTT cell phones don’t seem to be an option. Mostly because we know cell phones don’t work in the buildings, can’t use without an account, etc. Even so, I’d be willing to look at any phones that we could purchase and use ethernetwise without a cell account. I’m not locked in to the idea of re-inventing the wheel.

I’d be plenty pleased to test equipment that is already available… but I have been unable to locate any such equipment.

Thoughts, anyone? Feel free to contact me directly, address below.

A quick search for voip radio

Well, thanks for that. Just have to know the right words to search for, I guess!

I’d appreciate hearing views from other angles, as well.

Sincerely,

Ken

I’ve used Vocea’s WiFi devices. Great. The power is in the back end software of theirs- where the organization’s org chart is in the software, so you can call by job function. Such as “call security” or “call shipping clerk”, or “nearest xxx” or “joe smith” and the system figures out who’s on duty/on-line, who has the job function you want. The call joe smith example calls him at work, at home, or sends a text, as needed.

There are also several companies that make wireless long range cordless phones that link to a device that connects to office PBX. So these phones get all the PBX feature set. Home Depot retail stores have these.
