Facet & SW Maps no longer working with NTrip

It appears SW Maps automatically upgraded on iOS a few days ago. I was using my Facet RTK professionally just fine up to that point (about 1.5 years). The NTrip configuration went away and now there’s the option to add multiple clients. So I re-entered my data. I confirmed my credentials with the Ntrip client (MoDOT) so I know they’re correct. The “Get” button next to mountpoint doesn’t do anything so I entered the name manually. It says it will connect, but 0 bytes transfer. It also connects and disconnects over and over in about 30 second intervals. I confirmed with the Client that connections are actually being made. So it’s got to be a software problem with SW Maps, right? Anybody else encountered this? Since the authors of SW Maps are in Nepal, it’s not exactly easy to get feedback, and I don’t know how to get an older version of the app.

I really want to test this, as having multiple NTRIP credentials pre-saved in SW MAPS would be great. But I don’t want to break mine.

I’ll “borrow” my bride’s iPhone

Yeah. Definitely. I didn’t know I had automatic updates turned on for the app (I still don’t know where that option was), but if you can disable it, I think you should. At least until this gets figured out.

@jwells, my experience with the newest version was exactly as you described.
It is indeed an issue with SW Maps and not Sparkfun devices.

Its odd that basic functionality wasn’t tested prior to pushing the SW Maps update.

Thank you for confirming this. I’m really stuck now. I don’t use this very frequently, but when I do I need it to work. Hey Sparkfun Guys: Do you have any way of letting the SW Maps authors know that it is not working?

A better question would be whether there’s an alternative app.

SW Maps is “mostly okay” but isn’t good enough for any important work. For instance, there are “imitation features” like custom CRS that don’t affect anything (data export in particular) except for display. It also assumes that NTRIP casters are always referenced in WGS84 (which one?), which isn’t true for many freely accessible state DOT networks in the US, for instance, so exporting collected data requires a hack every time.

Yup. Got any ideas? I’ve just stuck with SW Maps because once I made it past the steep learning curve and was able to export my data into Civil 3D, I was kind of committed. I only need to use it 3 or 4 times per year, so the Facet RTK was a wonderful tool compared to the 20X more expensive professional systems.

Thanks.

Well, I’m in search myself. On Android, it’s possible to use GNSS Master as an NTRIP client and record data with any other app since GNSS Master can output mock locations to other apps. With iOS - I honestly don’t know.
There are several “professional” and pseudo-professional apps on Android, but I haven’t found anything that would do what I personally need (such as manually defined CRS, for instance).
I’m currently debating myself on getting a used Toughpad because, on Windows, it’s possible to used GDAL/OGR, rtklib, etc.

I’m always on the lookout for other options for iOS also.

I use SW Maps when I need a quick survey, like shooting a Road Crossing, etc.
I have a shortcut to the SW Maps EXPORT folder and I email the exported csv.zip file from my iPhone.

You get a separate csv file inside the .zip for each Feature Layer, so it’s easy to assign to point groups in CAD. Since SW Maps is freeware, it’s worth WAY more than it cost

I hope the Dev’s publish a fix for the latest release soon.

Even though I understand the argument that SW Maps is “at least something”, it apparently isn’t even applicable when it doesn’t really work.
I’m quite curious to try Javad Mobile Tools (Android) since it does have all the features relevant to North America, for instance. The question is whether it’s going to work with an off-brand receiver. Mine only has a USB Serial output currently, so I need to add a Bluetooth module to it to try.
Septentrio, unfortunately, got rid of their Pinpoint GIS for some reason, it’s still possible to find APKs of it at some questionable sources.

I can confirm that I’m now experiencing same exact symptoms as original poster, last week everything was fine.

As a workaround, I was able to put my NTRIP creds into my Facet internally and connect it to my phone’s hotspot. It’s a very fiddly setup, as the ‘config’ interface only likes certain browsers (I used iOS Chrome), but it does seem to work.

Definitely try “Rating” the app in the iPhone APP Store. I’ve tried emailing them but the mail bounces back undeliverable

I have had success with other developers via the APP RATING in the Apple APP Store. SW Maps email address listed bounces back to me undeliverable.

And I was almost ready to buy my Facet or Torch, and really dig into SW Maps. Now I am back to square one, as I only have iPhone. I really don’t want to buy an ANDROID tablet with CELL Service just to use FACET or Torch 5 or 6 times a year… Watching this thread to see if SW MAPS comes through. There last fix for NTRIP was 5 months ago per APP Store

Wow, that is cool workaround.

I posted a comment on the App Store. It doesn’t appear yet because I guess the moderators need to review it first. I also tried emailing the app developers, but I don’t have high hopes of it getting through.

I posted to the App Store too. I sent them an email maybe a year ago to express my appreciation for their app and ask them to consider a feature, but I never heard back at all. I think I offered to send them some cash too. I wanted a ‘happy beep’ for RTK Fix, and a ‘sad beep’ when Fix was lost. I’m under tree canopy a lot and an audible notification would be great so I could do other things instead of staring at my phone waiting for the satellites to come around.

I have not replicated this issue, but I passed along the link to SW Maps. Because SW Maps is their side passion (remember, it’s free), they may need to focus on the their daily job.

Yes, you’re right. I shouldn’t be complaining too much. I just wish I knew how to find an older version.

Thanks.

Developer of SW Maps here.

There was a bug in the iOS app with the NTRIP client, which has been fixed in version 1.2.1. The update should be available soon.

Please make sure that you are using the correct NTRIP version. SW Maps now also supports NTRIP V2.

We have been quite busy with the release of the new Android version (V3.0) so the development of the iOS app has been a bit slow recently. Thank you for using SW Maps!
