fingerprint scanners?

First off, I’d like to thank SparkFun for being the coolest DIYer electronics shop ever. With other DIY stores, I feel as if they cater to people who don’t know what mouser and digikey are, and overprice things accordingly. Here, the prices are right, and the products are actually things that DIYers really can’t get elsewhere in small quantities(GPS/cellphone/compass modules instead of the usual PIC chips and resistors and standard stuff).

With that said, I’ve been poring over the Internet for a biometric fingerprint scanner IC, and I was wondering if sparkfun could try to stock one. It appears that Atmel and Fujitsu make them; unfortunately, I couldn’t find any distributor which stocks any of these products. I’ve considered buying a commercial one and taking it apart, but no one’s actually tried it yet and I can’t be sure what chipset they use. There’s not much freely available technical data on the Fujitsu scanners, which I suspect most commercial scanners use.

Thanks!

THe problem with a lot of these sensors is they give a false sense of security. They can be easily, trivially fooled. SUre, they’ve be fun to have at sparkfun, but what would be even better is a project to build a low cost, much more secure version of a fingerprint sensor.
