Garage monitor & control

I live in a 3rd floor apartment with a 1st floor detached garage. I would like to design a garage door open-close monitoring and remote control system. Triggering a remote is no problem for me, but connecting to my home network could be. My home router sits in a shelf at the far side of the apartment … what wireless options do i have? RF links and what would you recommend? What do i look for in terms of frequency, distance, power, etc.

Something like cheap eval board or plug-in module would be perfect. I caught an episode of the Ben Heck show where he used an RF link to communicate at a makerfaire. I thought that would be a reasonable solution until i saw the price tag for the eval boards

Thanks much!

Lots of options.

XBee Series 1 modules would work for the RF link. No micro-controller would be needed in the garage, just use the XBee IO pins.

To connect to your home network an Arduino with an XBee and a WiFi or Ethernet boards should work.
