Going beyond the GPS Sparkfun Project

Greetings

Having read through the excellent GPS projects and basically understanding the principles I would like to advance the project to allow an active GPS unit inside a model plane that can transmit data back to a hand-held unit capable of leading a person to the model. The hand-held unit would require a map showing the initial point of release versus the point of landing.

I have seen some GPS units for car tracking however they require an account with a provider which would be an issue.

Can anyone give me some clue as to what I might require for parts to produce this Project?

You would need a GPS + antenna plus some sort of way to transmit location data too your handheld unit.

Sparkfun carries a telemetry radio that has >300 meters of range, that’s a possibility. You could use cellular data as well for even more range assuming you’re in an area that has cell coverage.

Absolute easiest way to do this would be to chuck an old phone in your plane and install a tracking app on that. You could then pull up the phone/planes location on a second phone. If you didn’t want to use an app, you could use the “find my phone” feature on most modern phones to locate it.
