What do you recommend for a PC based spectrum analyzer under $US 2000?
It must be capable of measuring 1MHz to 6GHz ideally. I am mostly interested in the 2.4-2.5Ghz range.

I have been looking for something like this as well. I found that Aaronia sells several types of “Spectran” spectrum analyzers that are in this price range. They appear to have nice PC software. I have not used one, so I can’t tell you if it will work for your app. I would not expect these to be as accurate as a $10,000 analyzer, but it might be good enough.

If you limit yourself to the ISM band in 2.4GHz, there are several good ones for $200 or so.
Suggest if you are interested in seeing 802.11 signals, a generic spectrum analyzer won’t work well due to the low duty cycle of 802.11, esp. if you are observing transmissions of others’ systems.
Cognio (now Cisco owned) has a good one.
