How to use the Chip Antenna

I am new to GPS and I am trying to use Chip-Scale GPS antenna. So I like to place the antenna according to the 37mm x 80mm land pattern. But I am confused about the 50 Ohm Microstrip line. Is the strip running through the chip antenna? Or the pattern need to be stopped at the soldering pads?

Is there a way to use the antenna without the land pattern?

Any help will be appreciated very much.

Thanks

You just need microstrip to the terminal on the antenna. You need a ground plane under the microstrip, of course. It won’t work properly without the microstrip unless the connection is very short.

Thank you leon_heller for your answer. If I attach the antenna right next the GPS module, can it be placed to the parallel to the module, i.e, 90 degree to the copper trace comming out from the GPS module’s RF-IN? I am trying to save the space necessary to place the chip antenna.

It’s difficult to tell. Could you post your layout?

The microstrip should be straight, of course. 0.1" width is what I use for FR4 for a 50R impedance, you need to know the characteristics of the board material to calculate it properly and they won’t be very exact.

do you need to have a 37 by 80 empty ground plane? And con you just have the antenna linked to the GPS with the microstrip and the blank space around it (17 by 27)?

Post your layout.
