Hi all,
I am interested in powering the esp32 thing with a lipo battery, but I realized I cannot buy lipo batteries from Sparkfun in Canada due to restrictions.
I need to go with a canadian supplier, however I only found lipo batteries without an embedded charge/discharge protection circuit.
From the esp32 thing’s documentation, I see it only mentions a charging circuit on board. Does it provide over discharge protection too, and all that’s needed for a complete and safe lipo cycle?
Say if I went with bare 18650 batteries, would something blow up haha  ?
I also checked amazon and their product listings are chaotic, I am looking for 1000-5000mAh batteries…
You won’t blow anything up and the ESP32 Thing won’t overcharge your batteries, but without a protection circuit on your battery you won’t have over discharge protection or short circuit protection. If you add a fuse, that will get you short circuit protection though.

Thanks! I am also wondering, is the esp32 thing getting old compared to, say the ESP32-DEVKITC-VE https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/deta … E/12091812. This one, compared to the ESP32 thing, doesnt need to press a button every time I need to upload firmware… I also wonder if there are other downsides to the thing, being an older version?
Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the other product so I’m not able to give you any up/downsides. Both should function about the same though.
