Load cell connected to PLC

I would like to connect a load cell to a PLC.

PLC I am using has analog input (current 4-20mA or voltage 0-5V).

Because of the resolution, I would prefer to use the current input.

Another way of communicating would be RS485 or RS232.

I can see a lot of hardware available here but I am not an electronics guru so I got a bit lost, could you help me out to find the best solution?

Hi Walkir, and thanks for your post.

You’re going to need a load cell amplifier between the load cell and your PLC. Load cells output a very tiny voltage that needs amplified up to a point where you can measure it.

If you’re looking for a 4-20mA or voltage output, you’re going to need a load cell amplifier with an analog output. Sadly, we only carry load cell amplifiers with a digital output and those won’t work with your PLC.

Something like [one of these set to 4-20mA output mode would likely work for you.](Load Cell Amplifier: ±10 VDC & 4-20mA Outputs | Load Cell Central)

Note that this sort of amplifier is often called a load cell (or scale) transmitter.

I know it’s an older thread but I came across this nifty little guy today:

Hi brow!

That looks like it would be perfect for Walkir’s needs. Thanks for sharing!
