I’ve built a hog trap and wanted to build a wireless transmitter/receiver to that will turn on when the door is closed. I’ve been searching around for something off the shelf that wasn’t too expensive and was long range but really haven’t found anything. I did find this but don’t know enough to build a receiver since I’m a noob http://www.electrokits.com/electronics/ … ts/112.htm I could assemble with schematics but don’t have the knowledge to design myself. All I want is something, I don’t care what it uses, would like to go about a mile or more and just want it to come on when door shuts and receiver can be something as simple as a led that flashes. Receiver can be plugged into wall or something. I’d have the transmitter on a like a 12v gel cell or something. Any ideas on something like this a project or something? Pre-made device? Thanks
Dakota Alert Murs system has a couple mile range. Eactly what you need. You can also build yourself from RFM. But they are overpriced.

After digging and digging I think I’m going to use a 2-way car alarm that supposed to have a 4000m range. Found on ebay for $75
Those 2 way car alarms operate in the 432MHz band, but I don’t know the power output. It will be interesting to see what range you will get. If transmitter and receiver are line-of-sight, you might get by without having to have special directional antennas.
The MURS radios that Ronny suggested operate in the 154 MHz band (and allows up to 2 watts of power). I think you will have less of a problem communicating for that distance with MURS as signal degradation due to foliage is less at 150 MHz. Those radios are also available from other vendors at slightly less (or slightly more).
None-the-less, I have used 1 watt hand hands on both bands to communicate point-to-point over a distance of several miles with the built in omni-directional antennas.
