I apologize if this is one of those crazy-easy to answer questions, but, to be honest, I’m having issues findning a direct answer via Google for this one.
I’ve just purchased the Sparkfun RFID USB starter kit. I’ve downloade and installed the FTDI and have connected the reader to my PC with no issues. I am able to ‘read’ the RFID tag and am recieving the tag’s ID number.
My question is what comes next: All I would really like to do to experiment/start is to find a piece of software that can recieve the tag’s ID number, compare to a database and make something happen ( play a video, display some text, etc ). I don’t have anything specific in mind yet, but was thinking about being able to take an item that’s tagged, read it, and have information I entered display on my screen.
I’ve got myself confused on what type/name of software can accomplish this task easily. Could someone suggest some simple software or coding within another program for me?
In principle, you can use just about any PC program package or programming language with the capability of opening a serial com port and reading data from it. On the PC, Excel is an example. Pick some package or programming language that you like, and learn how to read the serial port.
Have a similar query and I want to avoid using another hardware. Terminal has a ‘request/respond’ function (https://sites.google.com/site/terminalbpp/). “Terminal will wait for string and will respond. As a response you could also use macro commands”. Though i haven’t been able to get it to work, maybe because the disclaimer says its “experimental” or maybe I’m feeding in the wrong string!

If you have a similar query I expect a question mark somewhere in that post. Where is it? What are you asking?
If you need help getting it to work then please provide more details in what hardware you had, how you used the software and what you got as a response.

Thank you very much for reading!
I tried out near field communications (NFC).
Reader is my HTC smart phone. Built in.
tags are commodity NFC tags. Writeable onboard memory. $0.50 ea or so. Diameter less than a US quarter. Paper thin almost.
I got free apps for phone that read NFC tags. Write NFC tags. Link NFC tag ID to mini-database (Evernote) of text/graphics by tag ID.
Example I did: adhesive label quarter sized, NFC tags. Stuck on wine bottles in wine refrig. Wave phone near bottle(s). Photo of wine bottle label comes up on phone screen, showing wine details and photo of label.
Not practical though - a hand-written paper tag is faster. (!)
