MAX3110E

This seems like a very useful chip. it is the equivalant of a MAX232, A UART and all the needed capacitors and everything all in one chip. No external components or odd voltages needed, just attach one end to a DB9 and the other end to your PIC.

However, they appear to be very expensive. digikey has them for $9, I love the simplicity they would bring, but for that price I can get a MAX232 and upgrade my PIC to something with a UART.

So, my question is, does anyone know of another chip that does this same thing? I know TI sells MAX232’s for absurdly less than Maxim (or so digikey leads me to believe)… perhaps someone else has cloned this one or has something substantially similar…

There’s also the MAX233, which has the internal capacitors but not the internal I2C UART. Probably cheaper than the 3110 just because of volume … let’s see, DigiKey lists the '233 as maybe a dollar cheaper than the '3110. I guess the expensive part is the internal capacitors.

I’ve been using a Dallas DS275. They are not in stock at Digikey but Newark has them for $3.80. I have also bought directly from Dallas/Maxim. They want $3.05. I have had very good luck with this chip.

Hmmm… this might be a nice item to talk to my u-blox gps device…

ordered a (free) sample…
