mbed discussion thread 1

Thought I’d start a thread that’s limited to the mbed microprocessor and software from mbed.org

Just received mine. New experience, for sure, to use a web browser to edit and compile and initiate a push of the binary code into the embedded processor. It’s mostly good for hobby-types and casual evaluations for professional endeavors.

Today, for the heck of it, I was a passenger in a car out in rural areas and used my Andriod Incredible phone on Verizon 3G to login and edit/compile. Totally worthless activity, but really a new experience.

So if you’d like, let’s discuss mbed here…

Not to duplicate the mbed forum which is http://mbed.org/forum/

Remind me to not invite you as my passenger  This aside, the concept is cool, but not being able to using a source debugger with breakpoints and variable inspection is a definite downside. Unfortunately I don't see how they could activate the native debugger capabilities of the ARM chip without breaking the web-browser sandbox model... maybe by using an ActiveX, but this wouldn't work on your Android!

Despite (and even being aware) of this issue, I also have an mbed for toying. But this will not replace my FEZ Domino, unless they come up with a debugger!

Interestingly, the Netuino Mini, yet to ship (http://www.netduino.com/netduinomini/specs.htm), seems to combine the form-factor advantage of mbed and powerful developement of the FEZ Domino. Surely my next toy!

Now I must admit that the mbed site and in particular its code-sharing capability (import / export code) is a dream come true, and this is where web model is unbeatable when done right, as they did it

mbed is a great toy and intro to micros. But a pro must set it aside and get on with real work with real tools.

Still, it does give the pro a positive impression of the potential of the LPC17xx.

As to netduino … I’m wary of Atmel for ARM, esp. Cortex. And the Netduino is ARM7 and has only 128K of flash.
