My notes on using the GS406 (GPS-08889) module

I got my module today. I can’t solder wires to the SMT connector. So I am going to solder wires directly to the board.

I also just posted this note to the comments section for the module:

jsampson:
I have found a discrepancy in the data sheets.

The data sheet from SPK says “BATTERY input range 1.6V ~ 5.1V.” The data sheet from u-blox says that maximum ratings are “Backup battery voltage,(V_BCKP) Vbckp, min=-0.5 max=3.6”.

So it looks like applying higher than about 3.3V may blow out the battery backup input. I don’t see a regulator on the board for this. There does appear to be a series diode on the board.

I am planning to use a 3V lithium battery.

I’ll post more as I make progress.

I was able to solder wires directly to the board. I made an adapter board that has a 3.3V regulator and a lithium battery. Now I can interchange my GS406 with my EM-406A (GPS-00465) except they are different baud rates.

So now I’m off to do some testing.
