The other problem is the mother has componet on the top and the bottom when i put it in the oven and the solder start to melt won;t the component on the bottom fall off ???

any idea how i can reflow this motherboard

I take it you are trying to fix the dreaded ring of death issue with the console?

If you want to read up on the causes and solutions to this problem from a technical point of view then check out [this PDF from Manacorp

which is a datatsheet esque document for a commercial Xbox360 repair solution.

Another interesting one can be found at http://www.zeph.com/xbox_rework_repair_ … cpubga.htm

The processes layed out in those documents could be carried out using budget home equipment with the same end result, cheap Sunko rework stations can be had for under £50 on ebay, check out [this one which would be a good starter. With one of these and a bit of practice you could reflow the board.

And for those on an extreme budget, heres a video showing somebody fixing their [Xbox 360 with a paint stripping heat gun - He has masked off the other components with tin foil altough I’m not sure that would give any serious heat protection to the components.

Before you jump in and attempt a reflow why not try the method listed in this PDF http://copronymous.com/wp-content/uploa … -3rlod.pdf

The reason your console is displaying the rings of death is usually down to faulty heatsink clamps causing the motherboard to flex when it reaches high temperatures.

By replacing the clamps with something a bit more suited to the job, you can even out the pressure and stop the Ball Grid Array from failing. Llamas Xbox Site sells a solution, it would be my first port of call if I was you. You can find them along with a tutorial at http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/ri … mp_fix.htm

You may still have to reflow depending on how bad things are, but it’s worth a try - nice easy fix if it works.

Thats about it from me, that should be all you need to get going…

aite cool thks man i didn;t know i can get a reflow station for 50 anywas i been fixing xbox360 for about 1 year know iknow alot about the problem i had my own little reflow station but it broke and it was 2 expensive to buy back

i used a normal electrial oven with a thermocouple measuring the tempersuare on the board surface

working fine just use shinyest foil u can find and alotof it it protect those caps for you

heatgun work better tho casue i used the oven and had to change caps on the board the heatgun don’t damage the caps but the think about the heatgun i am scared if the solder melts it blows it away the chip

That is why the rework stations differ from using a heat gun, a rework station radiates heat with very little air movement.

Get it bought

Jumping topics from how to reflow stuff to the bigger picture, hasn’t microsoft extended their warranties on all xbox 360s to some large period of time and vowed to replace all 360s that give the red ring of death? Could you get the unit replaced under warranty?
