HI I am a real new by to x bee etc.

My goal is to communicate and control with a 12 v robot up to 200-300 feet with an on board arduino and motor controller.

I would like to control the robot using a game controller plugged into a laptop or cell phone with the appropriate AP.

I need to know which of the many x bee’s would suite me best and what I would need in addition to the x bee.

read the robot hobby web sites… they use the XBee and others.

Also a few web sites easily found with a google search.

And you should download and read the XBee Document from Digi Int.
