Object localization using ZigBee network

Hi,

I would like to implement an object localization system using ZigBee network. Basically, I will have fixed ZigBee routers or stationary nodes that can communicate with a ZigBee mobile device (Tag) to determine the RSSI. In this case, I want to be able determine the RSSI of each router. Will I be able to do this with XBee Series 2? If not, what can I use to achieve this? I’ve attached a diagram for illustration.

Also, I want to be able to track more than one tag or mobile node.

Thanks in advance.

That is a very popular research topic, and Google will find many examples for you. Here is one paper http://pe.org.pl/articles/2013/12/26.pdf

Hi jremington,

Thanks for you reply.

I’m aware for the implementation methods. I’m just not sure which hardware to use. On the paper you linked, are they using XBee series 1 or series 2? I want to use Series 2 for its mesh networking feature, and the ability to have ultra low powered end-devices. Also, I want to be able to locat more than one device at the same time.

Read the paper to see what they used.

XBee Series 1 has the Digimesh firmware option. Free. Better than ZigBS

position estimation to a meter or less isn’t doable with affordable hardware.

read up on trilateration, time-difference-of-arrival.
