Openlog fails to boot w/ external 3.3v

Hi all, Trying to run an open log Artemis in an embedded application. Trying to provide good external 3.3 volts to 3.3v pin on OLA. (Want to by bass onboard LDO for efficiency). I find the board just shuts off at around 3.5 volts when powered via VIN or the 3.3v pin itself with or without MEAS jumper the same. I’ve tried playing with all the firmware settings I can think of including low battery voltage threshold and adjustment factor.

My next thought is that it’s the 3v watchdog shutting it down. But I’m checking my power and it’s good. Might try to dismember the watch dog. I just don’t want to eat the losses on a near 5v supply going though a 3.3 LDO.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

In theory that should work, subject to soldering/good connections and whatnot

I would note that the OLA has quite a lot of inbuilt low-power features that might be a simpler method

Maybe share a photo of the connections on the board

Hi, thanks. I’ve gone and checked all my connections and resoldered some. I think I did have one board with problematic connections. Note that I have 3 boards I’m comparing and testing with to isolate variables.

It seems to start or reset on external power without an SD card inserted just fine. But with an SD card closing RST with just cause the LED’s to briefly flash on and off once. (~0.1s). The strange thing is, It was powered on and behaving highly predictably powered by external 3.3 with SD and other devices on the same rail. I started to power more devices off the same 3.3v rail and started to experience the non-starting again. Maybe my power just isn’t clean enough especially with extra devices. interestingly I’ve connected directly to my bench power now and failing to replicate the success I had before. It seems to alternate between those two states over different days. I’m trying to isolate more variables but it is leaving me quite confused. There’s almost certainly something I’m not controlling for but I can’t place what.

Hi @bluesnow ,

Please see the discussion linked below. The SD Card is probably causing your 3.3V supply to dip (brown-out) when it powers up.

I hope this helps,
Paul
