Hello,

I am using your SparkFun Optical Tracking Odometry Sensor - PAA5160E1 (Qwiic) for testing in our lab to determine the distance and speed of use of a battery-operated stick vacuum. However, we are conducting tests on different types of surfaces: carpet with long and short fibers, and smooth floors with dark and light colors. Unfortunately, this sensor only works on smooth and shiny floors.

My question is: do you have another sensor that is suitable for various types of surfaces? Could you recommend other technologies?

Hi there,

Correct, that sensor only works on smooth surfaces, and will not work on “textured” surfaces like carpet. We do not have any similar sensors that work on “textured” surfaces.

Does your vacuum have wheels on it? If so, you could maybe add encoders to the wheels to track motion that way.
