piezo vibration sensor

Hi. I ordered a couple piezo vibration sensors here’s the link. http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=9198

I don’t fully understand how the sensors work. I was wondering the voltage you need to power it with (didn’t say in the spec sheet). I measured the voltage at the positive pin and I thought the voltage was supposed to fluctuate to 90V? I had a circuit with a resistor between the pins too and still didn’t do anything. I got a few so I really don’t think their faulty. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

They need a very high impedance buffer, you will find circuits on the MSI web site. They don’t use a power supply. Try putting a scope across one and tapping it.

Is there a certain buffer circuit that works the best? All i need to do is know when it is active with a change in any value. I found a buffer circuit with two resistors in series connected to the positive of the sensor with a capacitor in parallel. Than there was one with a mosfet with a resistor and capacitor attached to gate and drain. I am heading to the lab right now to use the oscilloscope. Thanks

I don’t think there is much difference between them. A MOSFET is probably the simplest.
