Pro Micro does not show up in Device manager

I followed the instructions [here on setup of the Pro Micro. I went and selected the driver in the SH32U4_driver.zip folder, but when I opened the Arduino IDE, I did not see any extra COM ports. Now when I plug the Pro Micro in, nothing pops up in the Device manager, not even “USB device not recognized”.

Does anyone know if this is a bricking that can somehow be reversed somehow (w/an AVR programmer)?

With device manager maximised, expand the USB CONTROLLERS tree and unplug and plug in the usb cable listening for the windows sound and noting whether or not the pro micro appears as something in there.

If windows acknowledges something is there, the mouse cursor will always blink.

Did it come with a default sketch preloaded? ie LED blink? Does it show any other signs of life?

Somethimes a cheap usb cable can be a problem but this usually still gives a USB DEVICE UNRECOGNISED message.
