Yeah those didn’t look great to me, but I don’t really feel great critiquing someone else’s soldering :~)
I’m not sure how the two address pins would cause SCL to touch 3.3V, but maybe?
I was looking at the SX1509 breakout on the SparkFun site though, and I noticed the breakout board looks suspiciously like this one. Maybe a bit bigger on the edges, but the pins look to be very close if not the exact same location. So my new theory is: what if I just buy 5 of those, try soldering them onto pin headers same as this one is, and hope that by the time I get to #5 I’ve figured out how to solder properly? Anything wrong with that plan offhand, assuming the pins actually do line up?
They do look the same. Sure…be sure to grab headers to solder on and give it a go!
OK so I got the boards, and the pins do in fact match up exactly. However, the pin headers I had to use apparently are too thick of pins compared to the socket he has installed on this thing, but I can’t find anything on any header listing that indicates thinner versus thicker pins? The pin headers (and the socket headers they came with) look square shape too, and the pins and sockets on the board he used look more round… is there some obvious “oh yeah that means it’s this” that I’m just totally unaware of?
Not generally in my experience…just shoddy manufacturing tolerances and the leftover solder can cause them to not fit…some companies might sell them with rounded pins but i haven’t used any
The ones you had before look like standard 1mm spaced headers? I’d say measure their spacing to confirm and grab some sameday/nextday headers on amazon (or if you have a microcenter/similar nearby you can grab some from there) from a couple brands and retry
The spacing is precisely correct (0.1 in standard) so it’s not that. If I take just one pin and try to push it into a socket hole it won’t go, and one of his pins in the hole of one of the headers in this set is noticeably loose.
I ordered a few sets next day though. We shall see if one of the other sets match up better. Thanks!
I think you’re looking for these.

Yeah those might do the trick too. I’ll give them a shot too, thank you!
