programming AVR for first time

Hi there,

I have a PCB board wherein an AVR microcontroller is installed. This board is new and the AVR has never been used/programmed. Where to start as far as programming is concered?

I plan to use the STK500 board, AVR ISP programmer, and use it to program the AVR using SPI method. Is that the way to go? Any tutorial? sample codes? examples? anything?
