Proximity locator beeper?

Hello all,

had you seen in movies an special device that beeps the faster the nearest it is to the “tracking” device? It does not involve GPS, the tracker sends some signal, then, depending on the proximity, the receiver beeps.

Does it really exist? How is that called? Where can I buy/build such a machine?

Thanks guys!

easy to build a transmitter tag and a receiver, then microprocessor that beeps according to signal strength. But signal strength varies greatly according to thing other than distance, e.g., human body blockage, walls, floors, etc. But in line of sight, it’ll be fun.

Yep, there are lots of devices that really work well in movies. In the real world maybe not so well.

As its one of my passions, check my location. Avalanche beacons for back country skiing do what you need.

But boy are they pricey, partly due to low volume manufacture and somewhat to indestructable cases.

You might be able to pick up a dead one from Craigs list to be inspired from.
