RN-42 RSSI on Discover

Is there a way to return an RSSI on the initial discovery scan using this chip? I know I can get them after link using the L command. And I know I can scan for nodes using the I or IN inquiry commands, but this returns only the MAC, Name and type.

What I want is to connect to the most powerful bluetooth node I can hear (of a certain name/type). I have one bluetooth node per room, each room/lab is separated by walls. The device should connect to the bluetooth node in the current room. Unfortunately, sometimes it can hear several bluetooth nodes at once but generally one is very strong (-40 dBm) and the others are generally much weaker (-70-90 dBm). So this choice should be an obvious one.

Other BT2.0+ radios (such as BlueRadio’s modules) return the RSSI in the discovery scan. Is there a way to get this data from the RN-42?

Thank you for your assistance,

Brett

I’m not certain what you mean by that. The classes simply differentiate RF power, not RSSI.

Anyway, I emailed the company, their response wasn’t great:

Currently, we do not support the ability to report the RSSI during the from the scan command. To achieve this, you would have to connect to the device, report the RSSI, and then disconnect if necessary.

I will offer this to the Roving team as an enhancement request though.

Josh

I guess I may have to use a different module, such as the one from BlueRadio.
