Serial cable max length Olimex AVR - JTAG programmer

My serial Olimex JTAG programmer works fine with Atmega32, but it is inconvenient to use the very short cable (e.g. 20cm) to my PC.

I tried using a 9 pin serial cable 2m in length to extend but AVR Studio could not connect. If I connect the short cable directly then I have no problems.

Is there a published max length that I can use? Even 1m would be better.

Update - I tried a 3rd cable that I just discovered and it works fine. I can only presume that the two other cables I tried were null modem cables or something …

So I guess I can simplify the question and just ask if there are any problems using a 2m cable. But I presume not.
