Does the Simon game come pre-flashed with the firmware? I built my kit tonight and when I fired it up, I get nothing. Everything looks like it’s ok and I’m not new to SMT soldering, so I think I have a unprogrammed ATmega8.
I have an AVR programmer with a 10 pole target cable, but for the life of me, I cannot get anything to program. I am using a fresh install of WinAVR and the avrdude GUI. I THINK I set up avrdude correctly by showing it where avrdude.exe and avrdude.conf are. My programmer is an STKxxx variant.
Was wondering if you were able to get any further programming the kit. I finished the kit a few weeks ago (board dated 6-25-08). It’s my first experience soldering smd components but as far as I can tell everything is connected properly. I voltage tested the board to make sure that I am getting 5V out of it and have continuity tested every connection possible. I have been unable to program it either. I’ve tried two different cables to program - the usbtinyisp and using a parallel cable. Thought you might be able to provide some insight.
I’ve successfully programmed the Simon game with avrdude and my USBtinyISP programmer. I got the board at Make Faire, and it has the date 6-25-08. I soldered a 2x3 header to the ISP port on the board, and I’m using the 6-pin cable on the USBtinyISP.
Note that the Simon-v21 firmware, and the schematics at the Sparkfun page for Simon, do NOT match the board. The buttons and LEDs are on different ports/pins that what is shown in the schematic/firmware. I modified the firmware (by reading the traces on the board), rebuilt it with AVR Studio, and programmed it OK.
