Hello,
I am mass producing parts and need a simple stepper motor control setup.
It will be used only for advancing and returning a small lathe cross-slide.
I would like to be able to regulate the speed of the advance and the depth of
the advance. It would be a one step cycle - advance a set distance, stop, return
and wait for next cycle.
I’d like to avoid a complicated laptop controlled setup, maybe just a one button
push for each cycle.
I’m completely new at this but gather the basic concept of motor, controller,
driver, power supply. Maybe a basic, hardwired, cycled TTL logic controller?
Any links to info or advice would be helpful, thanks.

If it’s mass production and the cross slide is always indexing to a fixed location to cut, then back out, I’d go super simple and use a hard stop and a pair of limit switches. Then the control can be as simple as a pair of pushbuttons: one to go in, one to come back out. That motion can be controlled by anything from a basic Arduino to a pair of relays.
If you need multiple stop points, then I’d say look into steppers or servos.
Of course, old turret lathes can often be found at bargain basement prices…
Hello all, I decided to jump on this thread because I am looking for something very similar.
The difference being that I would like to have a stepper controlled by arduino with an LCD
and keypad. Most likely I will attach the stepper to some acme thread to control motion,
then type the dimension into the keypad and have it appear on the LCD and drive the stepper
to that distance. The problem I have is that I don’t have enough programming experience to
accomplish this. I am interested in a programmer for hire.

Not a problem. I can do this for you. Sending you a PM.
