SparkFun Forums Moving to Discourse the week of July 8th

As part of our effort to support and enhance our user community, SparkFun is transitioning our forums to the Discourse platform (https://discourse.org) the week of July 8th.

Discourse is an industry leading community platform that provides all the tools expected from a modern forum, and allows us to deliver long requested functionality, while maintaining the spirit and collaboration of today’s SparkFun community.

What to Expect:

Data: With a very few exceptions, all categories and related topics/posts are being migrated to Discourse.

Users: All usernames and email addresses are being migrated. Passwords are not being migrated. On your first log-in you’ll need to “reset your password” to gain access.

Categories: We are using this opportunity to update the category layout/structure of the forums to improve ease of use and present a logical structure that fits with Discourse.

Location: The new forums will be available at https://community.sparkfun.com/ (Note: This link won’t be valid until the transition is complete)

Transition Timeline:

July 8th

  • The final copy of the current form data is made and imported into Discourse

The current forum remains active, to support customers during the transition

  • July 8th – July 10th/11th
  • The SparkFun team organizes, finalizes and validates the Discourse implementation after the data import

    July 10th/11th

  • Migration complete – the new forum site is opened up for the community

The old forums remain available for a month to support the transition.

  • July 12th – Onward
  • Address any issues as they arise, make changes based on community feedback, and learn the operation of Discourse.

We expect many questions, and we’ll be available to answer them (we’ll be learning too!).

  • Over the past month, we’ve been testing Discourse – validating the data migration, learning tool operation and selected a theme for our community. Overall, we’ve been impressed and can’t wait to release this to the SparkFun community.

And finally, thanks again to this community – your support, insight and collaboration constantly amazes us!

    SparkFun
