SparkFun Thermocouple Marshmallow Stick - Looking for Hookup

There are hookup guides that are similar to the SparkFun Thermocouple Marshmallow Stick video https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13715, but nothing that describes the same combination of parts and programming. Does anyone have a hookup guide or recipe for this that they can share?

One question in particular has to do with the LiPower Boost Converter. Is power coming from the USB connection in the example? If so, what is the role of this board?
