It would be simple for an EE and fun for projects!
GMRS / FRS radios with ranges over 20 miles are available for as little as $30.00
I’d love to see a simple circuit that performs a time difference of arrival calculation to home in on a radio. IT could have all kinds of uses from hunting down a model rocket to finding your kids in disney world.
TDOA is very hard to do in the RF domain with sensors and emittors in close proximity to the ground. Too much multipath, too much variation in signal strenght, too many chances to correlate on the wrong pulse, too hard to coordiate accurate times accross a network. I sent three years on a company project doing exactly this. “There be dragons in these partss”
