I just got the uv40 GPS development kit.
Some notes:
The board is solidly constructed, nice 
The sample nmea stream on the web site is not the correct stream for this device… for instance the UV40 starts out with a big sony banner and periodically sends out the $PSNY message. The sample stream listed next to the uv40 has none of this, and is definately a different device.
Including the standoffs to mount the main board is great, however the module itself needs standoffs, and the length seems critical, it would be nice to have the 2 module standoffs instead, or in addition. This is particularly an issue because the antenna clips onto the module itself and it seems easy to rip off the whole module by tugging on the antenna a bit.
It would be nice to have a hole in the board that you could mount the included adapter through, providing some strain relief from the problem mentioned above.
All in all, nice kit, nice price,
