What Wireless/RF components suite my project?

Hello.

I’m working on a project right now where I need at least 1-way (but 2-way would be great!) RF communication. I’ve never worked with wireless/RF stuff in my projects and am seeking a little advice before I purchase anything.

In a nutshell, I’m going to build a simple circuit that connects to my computer’s serial port that transmits information to another circuit which will have a microcontroller on-board that will do a few simple things, including producing inputs to some motor driving circuitry.

I’d like to know what camera others recommend for this sort of project.

Thanks.

I don’t know about 2-way video, but the XBee modules (around $20 USD each) provide 2-way data flow. Keep in mind that these are 3.3v parts. A higher power version XBee Pro is also available for longer range.

…me either! I meant to say 2-way general RF communication. Sorry for that confusion.

In response to the XBee suggestion:

I’m quite interested in trying out the XBee, but wonder if it’s got any advantages over something like the cheaper module at http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=7815

What range?

XBee’s advantage is that it is plug-and-play for wireless serial port extension. Or, you can plan on 6 months of firmware and protocol writing to save $5.

I’ve spent some time comparing the devices and believe I’ve decided to try the X-Bee. Thanks for the suggestions and advice!
